People are being urged help Ketley Parish Council win £1.8m to revamp their 100 year-old community centre.
Parish councillors are calling on people to join them next month to discuss forming a Friends Of The Centre group to raise cashto refurb the for former infant school and nursery buildings, on Holyhead Road.
If enough interest is shown in the group members could help with ambitious refurbishment plans. The £1.8m is wanted to replace windows and heating within the centre as well as replacing damaged stonework, redoing drain pipes, sandblasting and repainting railings, resurfacing tarmacadam and creating changing rooms.
Martin Young, chairman of Ketley Parish Council, said: “We are having a meeting for the public on February 11 to see whether there is any support for such a group and to gauge the level of interest.
“The group can perhaps go for grants and bids for getting money to put right what is wrong with the building.
“Obviously the building has been standing for 100 years and would stand another 100 years but there are parts that need doing.
“The bid is for £1.8m looking to do everything.”
The parish council moved into the building in 2006 and put aside around £100,000 to do up the centre and Mr Young added this would be used if other grants are not found.
Last year it was feared the parish council may lose the centre before they a leasehold agreement was presented by Telford & Wrekin Council.
Council leader Andrew Eade said the deal was great news for the parish.
“The transfer of the former infant school to Ketley Parish Council is progressing well and very close to completion,” he said.
“I am delighted we have been able to work closely with the parish council to sell them the building for a nominal fee to ensure Ketley has a parish council building and community centre for many years to come.”
All ages and businesses are being invited to join the group and the meeting is being held on February 11 from 6.30pm at the community centre.
