Sports partnership aids young swimmers

Abraham Darby Academy is one of the eight secondary Schools within the Madeley Schools Sports Partnership.

William Reynolds Infant School makes up part of the Abraham Darby Academy family of schools, and as such have been enjoying an active PE and Sport curriculum.

The Infant School has been making massive progress towards increasing the amount of Physical Education on their timetable this year. With new initiatives like the Community Curriculum, the school has reached the national target of two hours of high-quality Physical Education a week.

As part of two hours of Physical Education, this year William Reynolds pupils have completed at swimming programme. The pupils from base three and four went swimming every week culminating in an “Aqua Splash Festival.”

The festival planning involved three parties-teachers from William Reynolds Infant school, the swimming teachers from Madeley Court Leisure Centre and the School Sports Co-ordinator from Abraham Darby Academy.

On the day of the event pupils entered the pool with excitement and anticipation and were soon involved with the three different stations.

The activities included “diving skills” a push and glide across the pool, “flip n fun” where pupils got their faces in the water and blew an object over the length of the pool and finally fastest first, a race across the pool.

All pupils participated and thoroughly enjoyed the new experience.

James a year two pupil, said: “The festival was really fun and the race was the best bit of the day”.

These thoughts were echoed by Primary Link Teacher Debbie Cambidge.

She said: “Swimming has been a huge success, the children really enjoyed the swimming and that wouldn’t have happened without School Sport Co-ordinators support and the support of the Young Leaders from Abraham Darby Academy”. It is clear the swimming lessons have been of massive benefit to the pupils of William Reynolds.

The pupils have been given an opportunity to progress their swimming skills and the lessons learnt will help them to remain safe in and around the water.
