Impressive Hornets denied by late show

Telford Hornets Rugby Club first XV suffered an agonising loss at the weekend away to Old Yardlians.

Having led for most of the match, by virtue of a try from Justin Tyler, and a conversion and penalty from Kev Gamble, an injury time try try from the home side saw them overhaul the Hornets to run out 14-8 winners.

The defeat really rubbed salt in the wounds as the Old Yards first score had been awarded for a penalty try in controversial circumstances, as the Hornets felt they had won the five metre scrum fairly and touched the ball down for what should have then been a 22 metre drop out.

Up until that point the Hornets had looked more than capable of holding out, as they defended strongly, even when their

player/coach Travis McIntyre was sin binned.

Hornets President, Dave Mann was full of praise for his team’s commitment, and in particular the performances from Justin Tyler, Scott Peters and Danny Beckett in the back row.

He said: “Unfortunately the same can not be said of the referee.

“I felt we were on the wrong end of a number of key decisions as both the Old Yardlians tries were questionable, and it was impossible to tell why Travis was sin binned.”

Next week the Hornets continue their fight against relegation with a testing trip to Handsworth.

Unfortunately, due to heavy overnight snow, the junior fixtures against neighbours Newport were called off, but players, coaches and managers are hoping to arrange games this weekend to compensate for the lost fixtures.
