Radio 1 star at wedding day gig

Radio 1 presenter Greg James has surprised a Telford couple by offering to come and DJ at their wedding today for free.

John Suckling, aged 31, and Ruth Whittington, 33, from Brookside in Telford will be given a wedding to remember as ‘generous’ Radio1DJGreg James is due to arrive at their reception today, Thursday February 4. John, who works for Central Taxis, said he is a massive fan of Radio 1 and decided to phone Greg for a chat.

He said he was amazed he managed to get through to Greg and he told him about his life and plans to marry Ruth.

He asked if the radio presenter would DJ at the wedding and to his surprise Greg happily accepted the invitation – without the fee.

John said: “I told him I probably couldn’t afford him to DJ for the wedding and he just paused for a bit and said ‘I want to do your wedding’.

“When I said ‘I can’t afford it’ he said ‘just give me a glass of Champagne’.

“I told my sister and she told my friends and family. They were like, whatever, but she put it on iplayer and saw their faces drop.”

John and Ruth have been together for six years and the couple have been saving a long time for their special day.

The reason they’re getting married on a Thursday is because they’ve been working on a budget. They think having Greg at their wedding is like the cherry on the cake.

“At first I thought it was a joke,” Ruth said. “I didn’t take it seriously.

“Greg James has been really generous not charging. He has made it really special. I think people still don’t believe it. It is so nice of him.

“I haven’t requested any songs I have left it up to Greg.”

The pair will be getting married in a church in Coalbrookdale before moving on to the reception.

Greg James told the Journal: “John rang up the show and cheekily asked if I’d DJ at his wedding so I called his bluff and said yes!

“I am really looking forward to it, they are lovely people.”

Greg started presenting the Radio 1 breakfast show in June 2007 and now hosts his afternoon show, weekdays 1 to 4pm.
