Telford denied third win in a row by late leveller

Assistant manager Larry Chambers bemoaned a missed opportunity for AFC Telford to get back in play off contention, admitting: “We let ourselves down.”

The Bucks were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Gainsborough Trinity last night, conceding an 89th minute equaliser that leaves them four points adrift of the top five in the Blue Square North.

Andy Brown had opened the scoring in first half injury time with his 33rd goal in Telford colours to join Lee Moore at the top of the club’s all-time scoring list.

And it seemed victory was there for the taking when Phil Trainer headed his eighth of the season with just seven minutes to go.

But Gainsborough, with former Shrewsbury man Sam Aiston instrumental in midfield, were full value for their point.

“I thought they were always a danger and we got what we deserved,” said a disappointed Chambers.

“Every game we play is massive at the moment, and that’s why I’m frustrated – because that was an opportunity.

“We were playing at home on the back of two good wins and we’ve let ourselves down. There were some great performances on Saturday (in a 5-1 win at Droylsden), but  a lot of the players were below par last night.”

Chambers was also disappointed that Telford were not able to take advantage of their half-time lead and see the game out.

They conceded less than three minutes into the second half and never managed to apply the pressure they had earlier.

“I’m very frustrated, I thought we shot ourselves in the foot,” said the Telford No 2. “We got the goal at a fantastic time and spoke at halftime about keeping it

tight and keeping our shape. Then within five minute we concede. We didn’t defend properly.”

Chambers pointed the finger of blame at his whole team rather than the defence alone.

“If I was one of our defenders, I’d be frustrated about the amount of protection I had in front of me,” he said. “Whilst I don’t think we defended greatly, the goals have generally come because we haven’t dealt with things in front of the defence. I’m angry about that.”

It was a Luke Beckett double that prevented the Bucks taking all three points with his late leveller a particular cruel pill to swallow.

“I was shouting from the sidelines that we need to keep our shape,” added Chambers. “Instead, we go kamikaze and go for the third goal. “It breaks down and Sam Aiston, whose had a good game throughout the 90, has been allowed to run through.

“Luke Beckett’s pulled off a great finish and it was our own doing because we made too many mistakes.”
