Lord Hill pub to save face with regeneration

The frontage of Dawley’s Lord Hill pub is to be saved during multi million pound regeneration plans for the town.

Telford & Wrekin Council has decided to keep the front of the pub after listening to comments from local residents.

The public were asked to comment on four possible options for the building’s future use: retention of the whole building, two options involving full demolition and the option that retains the front element of the building.

The decision to retain the face of the pub means there will be room for more shops, including a new supermarket.

It is also hoped the investment will lure back banking facilities to the town.

The council’s vision to transform the historic heart of Dawley is part of its Borough Towns Initiative.

Councillor Eric Carter, cabinet member for housing and regeneration, said: “This decision is an important step forward in the regeneration of Dawley and will mean the building’s historic façade is retained while enabling the transformation of the centre to continue.

“Although the details of exactly what businesses will be part of the new retail developments in the centre of Dawley are still to be decided, we hope that this would be able to accommodate a banking facility.”

Dawley councillor Helen Williams, said: “I am glad the situation has been resolved and look forward to the work starting.”

The first step towards revamping the area will see work starting on Burton Street Car Park on March 29.
