Club making strides on and off the field

Telford Hornets fixture against high flying Veseyans was always going to be a tough game, and not helped with so many squad changes due to illness.

However, the Hornets were out of the blocks quickly, as they took a first minute lead with a penalty from Steph Hildred.

This was answered on seven minutes as Veseyans kicked a penalty of their own, and a further penalty in the 12th minute put the home side ahead. From the kick off, however, the Hornets struck back, as a fumbled ball was collected by wing Adam Edwards to score under the posts, allowing Hildred a simple kick at goal. A penalty each maintained Telford’s four point advantage, but two loose kicks gifted the Veseyans two tries to give them a 21-13 half time lead.

Hildred added another penalty on 48 minutes but conceded three late tries and could only manage one of their own - Adam Gittings running 70 meters to score - as they slipped to a 43-23 defeat.

The junior sides travelled to Bridgnorth with mixed fortunes.

The under 11s suffered a rare defeat, as a string of injuries severely depleted the team in the final period of the match. Some excellent work from Charley Wright saw him at the forefront of many of the best Hornets plays.

The u10s coaching team were delighted with their squad’s performance as they ran in six unanswered tries in a fine display of attacking rugby.

Coach Anthony Wiggins was particularly pleased by the contributions of Jack Foulkes at scrum half and Matthew Anderson in the forwards, and Harry Pennells capped off a fine team effort with an excellent solo effort.

Under 9s Coach Andrea Davies was delighted to see so many players enjoying their rugby as they battled in defeat to a strong home side.

The under 7s played three matches, winning one convincingly 35-10, but being narrowly squeezed out in the other two. The whole squad contributed to a feast of entertaining rugby, with stand out performances from Freya Adlington, Ollie Reeves, Joseph Giles, and Alex Sterling.

Merffyn Broadway also scored his first ever Hornets try.

Telford Hornets held a fundraiser last weekend to raise cash for the club. Youngsters were out in force in Tesco and the club would like to thank the players, parents and coaches who supported the event, and the shoppers who kindly donated more than £1,000 towards new kit and equipment.
