A Woodside community centre has been awarded more than £6,000 to set up an internet suite for the public to use.
Members of Park Lane Community Centre are celebrating after receiving cash from UK Online as part of a government initiative to give internet access to all.
The cash will pay for new IT equipment, connections and cabelling, with some left over for staffing and marketing.
Fleur Hemming-mount, centre administer, said: “It is brilliant.”
Mrs Hemming-mount said they only found out about the money last week and four computers for the suite arrived on Tuesday.
Centre staff are still awaiting desks and chairs and hope to open the year-long project after Easter.
She said: “Everybody is excited about this and people will be able to book an hour on the computer.”
Victoria Bristow, UK Online Centres’ regional manager for the West Midlands, said: “We’re delighted we’ve been able to help fund Park Lane Community Centre’s new ICT suite as a brand new UK online centre.
“Park Lane is already a great resource for the community and now it’s going to be able to offer visitors the chance to learn anything from the online basics of using a keyboard and mouse, right through to online job hunting, shopping and banking, digital photography and digital music.”
The centre was also awarded £500 from Madeley Parish Council and some funding from Telford & Wrekin Council to go towards the project.
