Residents campaigning against ‘disastrous’ plans to re-route a bus down their narrow Telford road are celebrating after bosses changed their minds.
People living on Broadway Avenue, Trench, hit back at plans for the 55 Arriva bus route to be redirected from Trench Road down their street, claiming it was too narrow.
They feared changes would be dangerous for children going to St Luke’s Catholic Primary School as well as clogging up the road for other motorists.
Earlier this week a petition was set up, signed by around 25 households.
Bob Groom, borough Councillor, also wrote a letter of complaint to Arriva bus officials.
He said: “It would be absolutely disastrous.
“Broadway Avenue is simply not wide enough and there are schools there with children crossing more frequently.”
Michelle Parker, who lives on Broadway Avenue, said she was concerned about the plans as the road was already used for driving tests and the cycle proficiency.
After hearing the level of complaints Arriva bosses changed their mind about the route.
Keith Myatt, a spokesperson for Arriva said: “We have made the decision to revert back to the original route.
“Route 55 won’t be going along the avenue following consultation.
“This shows we have listened to our customers in that area.”
Mrs Parker said: “Excellent. I am happy because common sense rules. It shows the hard work paid off.
“I am sure everybody in Broadway Avenue will be pleased.”
Meanwhile residents in Priorslee and St Georges are said to be up in arms over changes to routes in their area where services may be cut.
Councillor Roy Williams said: “Quite a few residents have made their feelings known. People who use the buses are upset.
“It is going to affect Priorslee in a dramatic way.”
Details of route proposals are found on www.wrekinconnect.co.uk where there is also a feedback form for comments.
The changes are planned to be implemented on May 29.
