An £85,000 revamp of station loos

A train company is splashing out on an £85,000 revamp of Wellington railway station’ s toilets later this year.

Train bosses plan to gut the current block at the station and replace it with three new toilets.

At the moment, facilities at the station are locked after reports of anti-social behaviour. Anyone needing to spend a penny has to ask for a key.

Andrew Bennett, from London Midlands, said: “The good news is this autumn we are putting together a design for the complete refurbishment of the toilet block. It will cost around £85,000.

“There is an existing block of unisex toilets that is going to be gutted and replaced with new facilities. There will be three toilets, male, female and disabled as well as a new staff toilet.

“It is a major project. We believe it is very good news.”

There will also be a lick of fresh paint and newly designed London Midlands signage at the station.

Councillor Pat McCarthy said he welcomed the announcement because he had received complaints from residents over the station. He and fellow councillors will be bringing a motion to the next town council meeting to see the station improved and manned for longer hours.

He said: “I think that is a brilliant start on regenerating this station but I think it needs to be manned more effectively. My collegues and I see that as a crucial aspect of making the railway station fit for purpose.”

Mr Bennett said the station is currently staffed from 5.45am until 2pm.
