Blocks set to go thanks to people power

A Telford resident is celebrating after winning the battle to see concrete blocks outside his home removed.

Bob Holmes has lived on Holyhead Road, in Ketley, for 25 years and has been working for months to see the removal of square installations from near his drive - which he claims have created a driving hazard.

Councillors Sean Kelly and Hilda Rhodes have also been lobbying for more than a year to have them shifted.

Councillors claimed the blocks were put in without consultation. It was announced recently that the blocks are to go.

Councillor Kelly said: “Following the campaign I launched some time ago to have blocks removed it was decided to make the decision to do away with them.

“This has been good news for the vast majority of the local residents.

“They will be removed as soon as we can get contractors on site.

“It is an astounding victory and demonstrates just what people power can achieve.

“These blocks were put in without consultation which is clearly unacceptable.”

Mr Holmes said: “I am glad that they are going.

“They have been outside my home for 18 months. I have had nothing but a headache over them.

“I have had friends and family who have had a collision with them.

“I am glad that they are going. As soon as possible I hope.”

A Telford & Wrekin Council spokesman said: “Telford & Wrekin Council has taken the decision to have the blocks removed in accordance with the wishes of local residents.

“We are currently working with the Homes and Communities Agency as our joint venture partner in the Millennium Community project, to do this work as quickly as possible for local people, in compliance with highways legislation.”
