Familiar faces sign up for Tigers

Telford Tigers player coach Tom Watkins is building a brand new team, but there is already a familiar feel as the first two signings for next season are announced – returning Slovakian Marek Hornak and the coach’s own younger brother, Jack Watkins.

While the signing of Hornak is not unexpected, given that he is settled in the town and an established English Premier League player, Watkins’ other new recruit is sure to raise a smile amongst observers.

Having enjoyed a successful junior career, and impressing at Coventry Blaze ENL, Jack Watkins shows every sign of following in the footsteps of older siblings Tom and Joe, a former Tigers goalie.

Coach Watkins said: “Jack will be on a two-way deal with the Coventry Elite side, allowing him to practice with them a couple of times a week, and be with us for games.

“It’s a good opportunity for him to continue his development as a player.”

Hornak joined the Tigers in 2007 and took the top goal scorer award in 2009.

With the team mothballed last season pending new management, Hornak spent the year with Telford’s ENL side, the Titans, but never made any secret of his hopes for this year.

The 26-year-old said: “I made it very clear from the outset to the Titans management that I was taking a year with them in the ENL while I settled into my job and my university studies. They understood that and I was able to train and play with them, and to keep in shape.

“Tom brings lots of experience of success with Coventry Blaze and hopes to get good results in Telford. He understands the standard of play in the EPL and I’m sure he will do a good job.”

Watkins added: “Marek is proven at English Premier League level and his talents were recognised in the All Star team off the back of his last Tigers season.

“Although he has been playing at a lower level, you don’t lose those qualities overnight. I thought he was the right guy for our team and expect him to be an effective offensive weapon for us.

“I expect Marek to be among our leading points scorers this year.

“That is pressure on him, but he has played at high enough levels and is experienced enough to deal with that.”
