Evelyn Harper, of Boston Massachusetts, was on holiday with her family who are originally from Wellington when she entered the Telford & Wrekin sponsored competition.

Evelyn was shopping in Wellington while staying with her grandparents who live in Admaston.

The coloouring competition was part of the recent Shop in Wellington Day

Telford & Wrekin Council got behind local traders, restaurants and businesses in Wellington after shops were forced to close on a Saturday last month as a security measure due to a political demonstration.

The council helped to promote the Shop in Wellington Day on August 19 and council leader Kuldip Sahota was joined by town mayor Councillor Lesley Street for a photocall at Wellington Market.

As part of the campaign to encourage people to shop in the town, shoppers who bought items at Wellington market stalls and town centre shops on the day were encouraged to send their receipts to Telford & Wrekin Council to be entered into a prize draw to win a range of prizes.

The colouring competition for children generated 29 entries from youngsters aged between five and 16.

All the entries were colourful, eye catching and of a high standard.

Winners of the raffle prizes were:

•First prize of Sunday lunch to the value of £50 was won by 72 year old Wellington resident Sylvia Ludlow. The lunch is to be purchased at stalls from the town’s market and she has chosen to buy roast beef with all the trimmings. Sylvia’s winning receipt was from her purchase of morning coffee and Coffee N Cream in Bell Street.

•Second prize, a Microwave from Power Point, won by Joy Rebello, also from Wellington.

•Third prize of a £30 chip supper was won by Mia Holt, aged seven from Madeley. She has chosen to have her fish and chips from Smithfields fish shop in Bridge Road, Wellington.

First prize winner Sylvia Ludlow said: “I am absolutely delighted to win, I really don’t usually win anything and I’m looking forward to my Sunday lunch with fresh produce from the market.”

Council leader Kuldip Sahota said: “The political demonstrations that took place were a difficult day for everyone in Wellington but particularly the shopkeepers, pubs and other businesses in the town.

“What we did the following week was to demonstrate to the world that Wellington was well and truly open again for business and it was great to see so many shoppers out and about in the town.

“I would like to say well done to all the winners and I hope they enjoy their prizes and continue to enjoy shopping in Wellington in the future.”

All the prizes were funded by One Telford, Telford & Wrekin Council’s economic development arm.
