Steam railway back in action

TELFORD Steam Railway will fully reopen in April – nine months after its chairman was seriously injured at the site.

Paul Hughes, chairman of the voluntary-run attraction in Horsehay, Telford, was airlifted to hospital when his legs were crushed by a piece of railway track on July 2 last year.

No trains have run since but they did open the gates over Christmas for enthusiasts to visit.

But the attraction is now due to open on April 8 and 9 for an Easter bunny extravaganza.

Dave Angell, from the steam railway, said: “We are still aiming for an Easter opening. We have been busy doing things like building new toilets.

“Paul is fit and well and back at work at the railway. He is also getting married in a few weeks time so he will be able to walk down the aisle, which was his aim.”

The railway’s annual programme of events, which usually attracts thousands of people throughout the year, has now been launched with the Drive our Steam Tram Father’s Day special, the model gala, August bank holiday event and the Christmas Santa specials.
